Live Music – Opus 3

May 14, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

OPUS 3 is a unique, interactive jazz piano trio that takes unusual material and makes new jazz arrangements and vehicles for improvisation from it. They play David Scoggin’s original compositions, jazz classics by Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, and Duke Ellington; lots of or original jazz arrangements of newer Brazilian music by Djavan, Ivan Lins, and Gilberto Gil; jazz-fusion by Weather Report, Quincy Jones, and Clare Fischer; Gospel instrumentals; Dr. John and Ray Charles style R&B; jazz arrangements of classical pieces by Béla Bartók, Hector Villa-Lobos, and J.S. Bach; jazz arrangements of pop tunes by Radiohead, the Beatles, and U2; occasional ‘60s and ‘70s television themes; as well as all the usual jazz standards from the Great American Songbook.

“Musicians have been turning Broadway show tunes and Tin Pan Alley hit songs from the ’20, ‘30s, and ’40s into jazz standards for almost 100 years.  We like all those old tunes, but we also like to explore arranging and improvising on more current and multicultural music. We like to have as much variety and contrast as possible.”

OPUS 3 plays Scoggin’s compositions from his 2013 CD, Pan’s Meadow, as well as his newest compositions.

Jeff Addicott is the Rogue Valley’s first-call jazz string bassist, having played in dozens of bands over 20 years in the area. Theresa McCoy is not only a jazz drummer and a Latin percussionist, but is also principal percussionist and timpanist in the Rogue Valley Symphony. Jeff and Theresa both play regularly with Salsa Brava among many other groups.  Scoggin performs every Sunday at noon at Belle Fiore Winery, often with Addicott, and is currently subbing for his friend Don Harriss in the Rogue Suspects.
